- The Mystery of Robert-Houdin’s Light and Heavy Chest
Magic’s past meets the present! Jim Steinmeyer and John Gaughan reveal the secrets of Robert-Houdin’s Light and Heavy Chest in Genii March 2025. John Gaughan shows off Robert-Houdin’s Most Mysterious Illusion, The Light and Heavy Chest Two legendary magicians, Jim Steinmeyer and John Gaughan, unveil the secrets of one of magic’s most intriguing props. Watch the video below. A Fascinating Discussion Between Two Masters Few props in magic have the historical weight (literally and figuratively) of Robert-Houdin’s Light and Heavy Chest . In the March 2025 edition of Genii magazine , Jim Steinmeyer and John Gaughan take us inside the Chamber of Secrets for an exclusive look at this remarkable illusion. John Gaughan, a master restorer of antique magic apparatus, presents the very chest itself, while Jim Steinmeyer, a leading magic historian, unpacks its historical significance. Initially performed by Robert-Houdin in the mid-19th century , this illusion used electromagnetism to create the impossible—an ordinary-looking wooden chest that could suddenly become immovable. The Deceptive Genius of the Light and Heavy Chest The discussion between Steinmeyer and Gaughan reveals stunning details about this legendary effect: A Revolutionary Principle : The trick relied on an electromagnet hidden in the stage, anchoring the chest so firmly that even the strongest spectator couldn’t lift it. Craftsmanship Beyond the Trick : Gaughan showcases the fine mahogany construction, unusual hardware, and hidden mechanisms that made this chest a work of art. A Forgotten Treasure : Over the years, the chest changed hands through auctions and private collections, with restorations adding modern enhancements. An Unexpected Shock : Historical letters suggest the handle may have delivered a mild electric shock to unsuspecting spectators, adding to the deception. Watch the Video Jim Steinmeyer and John Gaughan Unravel the Mystery of the Light and Heavy Chest Steinmeyer reflects on how magic’s greatest illusions are often as much about their craftsmanship as their effect on the audience. “It’s always interesting seeing the artistry of magic mechanics—how everything fits together seamlessly.” Gaughan adds, “They put so much talent, time, and energy into these tricks—just to fool someone. That’s the beauty of magic.” More Magic Inside the March 2025 Edition of Genii Beyond this deep dive into The Light and Heavy Chest , this issue of Genii is packed with incredible magic, including: Ellen Coghlan’s Fool Us Legacy – How she consistently baffles Penn & Teller. New Magic from R. Paul Wilson – A clever coins-to-glass effect. David Regal’s Latest Routine – A prediction trick with a game-changing method. Sarah Rodriguez’s Debut in Genii – A technical and fast-paced collector’s routine. Blake Voght’s Experimental Magic – A challenge to create a new trick in one hour. - (Review) Atomic Deck by Craig Petty – Magicians React!
Craig Petty's " Atomic Deck " offers a groundbreaking solution to the classic Any Card at Any Number (ACAAN) effect, aiming to replicate the legendary Berglas Effect with remarkable simplicity and effectiveness. Update (Mar 02, 2025): We've added a new section below covering what magicians are saying about Atomic Deck —the praise, the controversy, and Craig Petty’s response! Click here to jump to the magic review video by Paul Romhany. This innovative trick allows a freely named card to appear at a freely chosen number in a deck, all without complex sleight of hand or memorization. Key Features: Craig Petty's The Atomic Deck Review by Paul Romhany Here are some of the key features to Craig Petty's Atomic Deck: Ease of Use Designed for magicians of all skill levels, the "Atomic Deck" requires no sleight of hand, memorization, or mental calculations. The deck remains in full view throughout the performance, and cards can be dealt directly into the spectator's hands. The method is facilitated by a specially designed deck that handles most of the work for the performer. Innovative Design The deck utilizes a unique stock that eliminates the need for roughing sprays or chemicals, ensuring durability and longevity comparable to a standard deck of cards. This thoughtful design allows for some level of examination by lay audiences without revealing the secret, though magicians may detect the method upon close inspection. Versatility While the primary effect involves the use of a phone to encode necessary information seamlessly, alternative methods are taught to perform the trick without any visible technology, catering to various performance styles and preferences. My Thoughts PROS: Easy to do Use any phone to do the trick - no APP, just web-based applications. Two different versions - one is a 'science' type site people punch in information to and you can see what you need - the other is a fake 'note's on your phone that will get you the peek you neeed. Supplied with gimmick cards. CONS: It works about 80% of the time due to the method (calculations), so you must ask several people to write down Any Card and Any number. Cards can't be handed out - well, they can, but the order can't be disturbed. Cards are paper-thin, which is part of the method, so I'm not sure how long they will last. Overall, Murphy's Magics "Atomic Deck" stands out as a significant advancement in the realm of card magic, offering performers a practical and astonishing tool to captivate audiences with the elusive ACAAN effect. Price: $49 US dollars Watch the Review For a visual demonstration and further insights, you might find this review helpful: Magic Community Reactions: Praise & Controversy Few tricks lately have sparked as much conversation as Atomic Deck , and the online magic community has been buzzing with passionate discussions. Some call it the "trick of the century," while others debate its practicality, method, and construction. Here’s what magicians are saying: The Praise: Innovative & Powerful Many magicians are blown away by the effect’s clever method and powerful impact. Some are even dubbing it a game-changer for the classic Any Card at Any Number (ACAAN) plot. "This is possibly the trick of the century." – Joel S "I ordered three today—one for me and two for my best friends. Been waiting for this for a long time!" – Michael K "Love your work, Craig! Atomic Deck is AMAZING!" – Doc S "Just watched the trailer, and it looks very good! Laypeople won’t care if it’s not a Bicycle deck." – Phil K The mechanics of the trick—designed for a seamless audience experience —are a highlight. Even those hesitant about gaffed decks acknowledge how smoothly the cards handle and how deceptive the effect is for laypeople. The Criticism: Practicality & Handling Concerns On the flip side, some magicians have concerns, particularly about the thin stock of the cards and the necessity of using a phone in the performance. "Minus the paper-thin cards that aren't Bicycle… awesome effect." – Daron M "Super thin, weird-looking cards, restrictions that make you stumble around until they get the number and card you want, and you have to use a phone." – William V "Why did you make the cards such an odd-looking deck? Most guys use Bicycle." – Andy A Others have debated whether Atomic Deck truly delivers on its "Any Card at Any Number" promise. "It’s NOT any card at any number 100% of the time." – Dean C "There are about 10% of card/number combinations that won’t work, making it somewhat of a restricted card choice." – Robert P Additionally, discussions on the trick's advertising and transparency have surfaced, with some arguing that the marketing doesn’t fully explain certain details, like whether a phone is required for every performance. "There is ZERO mention that you need a mobile phone for every performance." – Dean C "This isn't the 'Holy Grail' of ACAANs—just hype." – Jeffery B Craig Petty Responds to the Debate Craig Petty has been highly active in the discussions, defending the product and engaging directly with magicians. On the card stock: "Bicycle was the first company we reached out to, but they don’t make thin cards like this." On the phone requirement: "We are updating the tutorial constantly with new methods. A big update is coming that eliminates the need for a phone entirely." On marketing transparency: "I expose all my tricks openly before release. Anyone can see exactly how it works before they buy it." Despite the polarizing opinions, Atomic Deck is selling fast, and many who have actually performed it in front of audiences report that it kills. What Do You Think? - Penn & Teller’s Next Trick? The Casino World is About to Find Out
Penn & Teller are bringing their magic to the casino floor with a brand-new table game. Is it a trick or a jackpot? Find out here! Penn & Teller’s Next Trick? A Vegas Casino Game You Didn’t See Coming Penn & Teller Bet Big: Inside Their Mysterious New Casino Game Legendary Las Vegas comedy magicians Penn and Teller have partnered with Adventura Gaming on a new table game: Penn & Teller Casino Monte. The game will be unveiled at a media event at Rio Las Vegas, the longtime home of Penn and Teller’s show, on March 3, 2025. From what we can tell, Adventura Gaming is “a boutique gaming company pioneering branded casino games that blend world-renowned celebrities and brands with cutting-edge gameplay.” We can tell this because that’s what the invitation to the Rio media event says. According to Adventura, Penn & Teller Casino Monte is the “first celebrity-branded casino table game of its kind.” 🔗 READ: The Science of Illusions: Teller Reveals How Magic Tricks Your Brain The sheer rarity of celebrity branding on table games makes this newsworthy. The fact that a Las Vegas-based duo is involved makes it even more intriguing. If the game takes off, we trust this will be a substantial amount of passive income for Penn Jillette and Raymond Joseph Teller, legally just Teller. Penn and Teller are known for their irreverence, so the game may be a wink to three-card monte, but any game on a casino floor is highly regulated, so there will be no shenanigans.
- The Science of Illusions: Teller Reveals How Magic Tricks Your Brain
How does magic fool our brains? Neil deGrasse Tyson, Teller, and neuroscientist Susana Martinez-Conde reveal the secrets behind illusions. The Science of Illusion: How Teller & Scientists Prove Your Brain is Easy to Fool Teller Reveals Magic Tricks Your Brain Have you ever wondered why magic tricks leave you amazed, baffled, and sometimes laughing at yourself? Neil deGrasse Tyson, alongside co-host Gary O’Reilly, sat down with Teller (of Penn & Teller ) and neuroscientist Susana Martinez-Conde to explore the surprising science behind illusions. From the psychology of misdirection to the evolutionary quirks that make magic possible, this episode of StarTalk takes a deep dive into how magicians manipulate reality. Watch the Podcast How Magicians Hack Your Brain: The Science of Illusion with Teller 🎩🧠 Biggest Takeaways Your brain constructs reality, not just perceives it. 🧠 Magic works because our minds fill in gaps and take shortcuts. Misdirection is a cognitive illusion. 🎭 Magicians don’t just trick your eyes; they manipulate your attention. Magic and science share a mission. 🔬 Both seek to understand human perception—just from different angles. How Magic Hacks Your Brain Teller, the famously silent half of Penn & Teller , breaks his silence in this rare recorded interview, sharing his insights into the art of deception. “The fun of magic is partly being amazed. The fun of magic is also partly figuring it out if you can. It’s okay to be thinking that way,” he explains. Neuroscientist Susana Martinez-Conde agrees, revealing that magic tricks our minds because our brains constantly construct reality. “Illusions are not a bug; they’re a feature,” Susana Martinez-Conde says. “Illusions are not a bug; they’re a feature,” she says. Our brains simplify information to react quickly—an essential survival trait—but magicians exploit this tendency, leading us to see things that aren’t there. The Power of Misdirection Misdirection is more than a magician waving a hand to divert your attention. “When the audience laughs, time stops, and the magician can do anything,” Teller shares, recalling wisdom from legendary magician Johnny Thompson. Whether through humor, storytelling, or unexpected questions, magicians shift focus long enough to work their tricks unnoticed. Martinez-Conde describes this phenomenon as inattentional blindness —our brains simply don’t register what we’re not focusing on. “If I ask, ‘Does anyone have a scarf?’ your brain starts searching for an answer, and while you’re thinking, you miss the trick happening right in front of you.” “Magic is kind of the playground for this very important thing of how we ascertain truth.” Teller says. The Ethics of Magic: Truth vs. Trickery One of the most powerful discussions in the episode touches on the ethics of deception. Teller and Penn have long been vocal critics of psychics and fraudulent mediums who claim supernatural powers. “It is very unpleasant to see your art form turned into a crooked operation that hurts people,” Teller states. Neil deGrasse Tyson agrees, noting how Penn & Teller use their magic not just for entertainment but to promote critical thinking. “If I can teach you something, and you don’t even realize you’re learning, that’s a magic trick,” Tyson remarks. That’s It! Magic isn’t just about fooling the eye—it’s about understanding the brain. Whether you’re a magician or a science enthusiast, this episode of StarTalk proves that the real magic is in how we perceive the world. As Teller puts it, “The fun of magic is trying to figure it out and failing. If you succeed, you’re happy. And if you fail, you’re happy. It’s a no-lose situation.” What to Read Next: Penn & Teller Fool Us How to Lie Better with Richard Wiseman Hidden Genius of Michael Weber

- Bite-Sized Magician Wisdom: The Power of a Strong Opening and Closing Line
Master magician Eugene Burger believed every trick deserved a strong opening and closing line. Learn why presentation is the key to magic. Eugene Burger’s Magic Wisdom: Why Every Trick Needs a Strong Opening and Closing Line A Great Trick Deserves a Great Frame Eugene Burger, one of magic’s most profound thinkers, once said: "Every magic trick deserves a good opening line and a good closing line. They deserve that." It’s simple yet powerful wisdom and powerful performance advice . A trick without a strong presentation is like a joke without a punchline—it might work, but it won’t hit as hard. Magic is more than sleight of hand ; it’s storytelling, psychology, and showmanship . The way you introduce and conclude your effects can transform a simple trick into an unforgettable experience. Why Presentation Matters in Magic A well-structured performance doesn’t just showcase skill; it engages and captivates the audience. Here’s why framing your tricks with strong presentation elements is crucial: Presentation Trumps Method – The audience remembers how the trick made them feel, not just the mechanics behind it. Enhances Impact and Memorability – A well-crafted script turns a trick into a story, making it more memorable. Provides Texture and Depth – Presentation adds richness and intrigue, elevating the experience. Disguises Trickery and Enhances Honesty – Good scripting makes the magic feel more organic and less like a ‘trick.’ Elevates Simple Tricks – A clever introduction and a solid ending can make even a basic effect feel like a masterpiece. Controls Audience Attention – A compelling script guides the audience’s focus, minimizing chances of exposure. Commands the Narrative – Justifying actions within a trick makes everything feel intentional and real. Provides a Unique Touch – Your presentation is what makes your magic uniquely yours . Requires Courage – A solid script provides confidence, making you a more engaging performer. Maximizes Impact – Thoughtful phrasing at key moments can significantly heighten reactions. Crafting Your Openings and Closings Want to make your tricks more impactful? Take a cue from Eugene Burger. Experiment with different ways to introduce your effects and find lines that resonate with your persona and audience. Similarly, ensure your closing line leaves them with a lasting impression—whether it’s a moment of wonder, laughter, or amazement. A trick that starts strong and ends even stronger isn’t just a trick—it’s an experience. What’s Your Favorite Magic Quote? Let’s keep this series going! That's not to say there were wasn't comment drama. Blackpool Magic Convention—one of the world's largest gatherings of magicians, filled with wonder, surprises, and non-stop magic! A Convention Like No Other For three days, Blackpool transforms into a global hub for magic. The convention, led by Russ Stevens and Russ Brown, has grown into an overwhelming spectacle of lectures, competitions, and performances. But with great magic comes great debate, and this year’s event was no exception. Day One: Highs and Lows The convention kicked off with its usual mix of awe-inspiring performances and logistical frustrations. Registration, unfortunately, was once again a sticking point—hundreds of attendees left waiting in the cold, an issue that seems to persist year after year. As a Canadian, perhaps this is a bit relative. However, the first day wasn’t without its highlights: Blake Vogt wowed with his impossible card restorations. Oliver Tabor’s lecture on openers and closers was packed with practical wisdom. David Stone’s alter ego, Klek Entos, emerged as a standout horror-magic character. Not all performances were equally well-received. The International Close-Up Show had its share of misses, with some acts failing to engage the audience. One performer was even called “horribly out of her depth,” leading many to question the booking decisions. Day Two: A Marathon of Magic With a jam-packed schedule from 9 AM to well past midnight, Day Two tested even the most dedicated attendees. Some of the biggest moments included: Michael Ammar’s legendary presence: His lecture blended new material with timeless classics. David Stone’s comeback: A high-energy, laugh-a-minute lecture that had everyone talking. The One Contest: Despite a £30,000 prize, many felt the competition lacked top-tier talent. But perhaps the most talked-about performance of the day was Jack Rhodes , the former nuclear engineer turned magician. His innovative mix of tech, comedy, and magic resonated deeply with the audience. As one attendee put it, “Jack has amazing audience rapport—something so many performers desperately lack.” Day Three: The Grand Finale As the convention neared its end, the performances continued at full throttle: Jeki Yoo charmed with his signature blend of visual magic and humor. Jon Armstrong delivered pure comedy gold with his ‘Tiny Plunger’ routine. Eric Leclerc pushed boundaries—sometimes too far—with edgy humor. But the most controversial performance of the night belonged to Rick Thomas . While undeniably skilled, his outdated illusions and questionable stage interactions left many uneasy. The consensus? Magic evolves, and performers must evolve with it. The Verdict: Magic’s Ultimate Gathering? Was this the best Blackpool Magic Convention ever? Let us know what you thought in the comments.
